Programme Details
Jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Trustees of the British Museum
Jointly organised by Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the British Museum
Solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust
The exhibition "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: A History of the World in 100 Objects from the British Museum" features 100 carefully selected object displays from the British Museum's collection, showcasing the essence of global culture spanning more than 2 million years. In tandem with the exhibition, Hong Kong Heritage Museum is launching a series of education programmes, including lectures, guided tours of the exhibition, activities for students and children, workshops for young and elderly people, social harmony events, and cross-generation programmes, with the aim of arousing the interest of visitors in world history, culture and art. Echoing the British Museum's exhibition and adding local features to this exhibition, we have specially arranged a display in the Education Gallery (Thematic Gallery 5) with the theme of 100 groups of period objects about Hong Kong, and have organised a variety of educational activities to suit people of all ages and backgrounds.
"Discovering Treasures from the British Museum" Lecture Series
Several scholars and experts from various disciplines will host the lectures. From their different perspectives, they will use the exhibition and exhibits as a springboard to explore the development of global culture and the various stories behind the cultures.
(I) Lecture: Viewing World History through the Collection of the British Museum "A History of the World in 100 Objects from the British Museum"
The British Museum has selected 100 groups of exhibits from its vast collections and displayed them in chronological order in the exhibition "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: A History of the World in 100 Objects from the British Museum", allowing visitors to explore the life and experiences of the people in the past. These representative exhibits are from different eras and regions: from rare survival tools that our early human ancestors relied on to credit cards that are commonly owned by modern people nowadays. The exhibits are concentrated pieces of world history, recording the power of observation and creativity of human beings at different periods of human history.
In this lecture, the speaker from the British Museum will share with the audience the curatorial concept of the exhibition. Through the stories behind different exhibits, the speaker will explore the footprints of human development over the past 2 million years and discuss with the audience how the development of civilisations has changed the world.

(II) Lecture: Exploring the Development of and Exchanges between Chinese and Foreign Cultures through Ancient Artefacts
During the past 100 – 200 years, expedition, archaeology and art history research have revealed new objects and added new ideas to our understanding of the ancient world. Cultural developments around the world have various origins. Different cultures have their own manifestations of work and tools, such as metals, ceramics, silk and writing. While their origins were quite separate, the interactions and collisions between different cultures have resulted in a fusion of cultural phenomena. In response to the exhibition theme of "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: A History of the World in 100 Objects from the British Museum" and to connect it with local history, we have created a novella, titled A Day in Time – 1935 Hong Kong, Illustrated with 100 Period Objects, featuring a one-day story using 100 sets of period objects with Hong Kong history as the backdrop. We have also turned the novella into a giant 3-D book for display in the museum's Thematic Gallery 5, showing some of the scenes from the story, complete with multimedia and interactive installations.
"The Curio Studio" Education Zone (Thematic Gallery 5)
Hong Kong Heritage Museum has converted a section of Thematic Gallery 5 into "The Curio Studio", featuring scenes from the novella A Day in Time – 1935 Hong Kong, Illustrated with 100 Period Objects in a brand-new deductive way. The scenes include 100 sets of Hong Kong period objects, covering clothing, eating and drinking, transportation, livelihood, and other everyday items – all as they were used on a day in 1935. This zone has been transformed to transport visitors into the story by means of a giant 3D book, with a 1930s Chinese home, an old photo studio, a street, and a Mid-Levels mansion. Visitors can immerse themselves in the story, wandering through the nostalgic scenes, and visiting a home and a street in pre-war Hong Kong. The multimedia devices in this zone give visitors an audio-visual sensory experience that is akin to being in 1930s Hong Kong.
The Old City Today: A Tour Back to the 1930s #
